Questions and Answers

Question:

Can you translate a 80-page document by tomorrow evening?

Answer:

Yes, we can do this, but we strongly recommend you against working in such manner as it is not possible to properly process an entire document of such volume within such a short period of time. By the standards set in our company a document should be translated by ONE translator. One translator can normally translate eight pages a day.

A top class translator working together with a typist can do up to 20 pages without serious deterioration of quality.

In order to fulfill a large order the text must be split into several small portions that will be translated by several translators and then put together and edited. However, this may result in inconsistency of terminology and style.

For this reason we do not welcome such orders.

Question:

How does simultaneous translation differ from consecutive translation?

Answer:

In consecutive translation the speaker makes a pause after each phrase or speech segment to allow the interpreter to translate what has been said into a foreign language.

In simultaneous translation no such pauses are made and the speaker speaks as if there were no interpreter. This method requires a special equipment and, as a rule, three (or two) interpreters who work in 20-30 minute shifts.

Simultaneous translation requires from the interpreter not only an excellent mastery of the language but also special skills of simultaneous comprehension and reproduction of the speech in different languages, which involves a high nervous strain. This is why the rates charged for consecutive and simultaneous translation differ by an order of magnitude.

Question:

Do you use machine translation?

Answer:

No, machine translation is ruled out in our company and there are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, no matter how powerful and up-to-date the existing machine translation programs are they cannot process the text so flexibly and efficiently as a human translator does. We believe that machine translation may only be of some use for specialists who want to get a general idea of what the document in a foreign language is about . Such methods are unacceptable for high-quality translation.

Question:

What is a translation page?

Answer:

To unify calculation of text volumes we (like most translation companies) use a conventional page consisting of 1800 characters (strokes), i.e., 60 strokes per line, 30 lines per page. This approximately corresponds to a text fragment printed in type size 13 with one-and-one-half line spacing.

Question:

Do you work on weekends and holidays and what are you rates on such days?

Answer:

Yes, on weekends and holidays we work as usual and charge usual rates. The rates depend not on the day of the week but only on the volume and urgency of the order.

Question:

Do you grant discounts on large volumes?

Answer:

Yes, we grant discounts but only on non-rush orders of sufficiently large volumes. In each concrete case we discuss various options with the customer and, as a rule, come to a mutually acceptable decision.

Question:

How do you calculate the price of the translation?

Answer:

The calculation is done on the text of the translation rather than the original text. If a text has to be translated, say, from Russian into a foreign language, the text in the foreign language will be used for the calculation. As a rule, this is a text printed in Microsoft Work which allows (option “Statistics”) the exact number of words to be counted. If the order is printed in some other editor which has no provisions for word counting, its volume is determined by converting the text into Microsoft Word document. It must be remembered that this calculation does not include 20% VAT.

Question:

Do you reproduce drawings and graphs? How much do you charge for this work?

Answer:

Yes, we have the required facilities and sufficient experience to reproduce drawings and graphs in an electronic format. The price of such work is determined in each concrete case separately.

Question:

Is your translators' staff large enough to provide translation at conferences and other forums?

Answer:

Yes, we have enough translators to take care of such events. The last of such forums was the conference held by the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation in the autumn of 2002, at which the President of the Russian Federation was present.

Question:

Do you guarantee confidentiality of the documents you receive for translation? What practical steps do you take for this purpose?

Answer:

Yes, we do everything necessary to ensure confidentiality (subject to the customer's instructions). Our representative can pick up the material at the customer's office and deliver the translation there if the customer does not want these materials to be sent by e-mail. We have signed a non-disclosure agreement with a number of our customers and our translators are aware of the responsibility for the breach of the provisions of such agreements.
